Phil Anselmo Offers Advice to Aspiring Metal Acts, Delivers Poetic Reading of AC/DC Classic
Yes the world has changed since Phil Anselmo first came up through the ranks while making a name for himself in Pantera. But the rocker has continued to evolve over the years and is very in touch with how things operate these days both as an artist and a label chief and he’s ready to share his wisdom with aspiring metal acts.
In a new video posted via Fuse, Anselmo offers his tips, which include two seemingly contradictory ideals that can be used to strengthen your career. At the beginning of the clip, he states, “First of all, rip off about 20 of your favorite bands, not two. Twenty! Thirty! Take every influence in the world that you love personally and make it part of your repertoire, if you will, and eventually you’ll find an original sound in there somewhere in there.”
But on the opposing side, he also champions innovation. The vocalist says, “Big ups to all the kids out there who are innovators and changing things, not just imitating. I love digging for the new innovators of music. I love it, I love it, I love it, I live for it. And once again, I’ll say it, ‘Keep on fighting, you youngsters.'”
Other tips Anselmo suggests are constant gigging and practice, being willing to gig for nothing to get the experience, being honest in your approach and making yourself as visible as you can through shows, media and other outlets.

In other recent Anselmo news, the rocker recently offered up a spoken word version of the hit AC/DC song, ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock N Roll).’ With Anselmo’s version, it comes off more as a manifesto and definitely takes on a darker feel with the Angus Young riffage replaced by haunting piano.
