Nintendo Rumored to Enter Mobile Market (Updated)
Update: Nintendo responded to Nikkei’s report, offering a statement declaring it was not seeking to introduce mini-games on the mobile market, yet did not deny there might be some mobile plans in the future that didn’t include actual games.
“Nikkei’s article contains information previously stated by Mr Iwata during past press conferences, including statements which relate to Nintendo’s willingness to make use of smart devices to promote our products.
However during such past announcements Mr Iwata has also stated that Nintendo’s intention is not to make Nintendo software available on smart devices and as such, we can confirm that there are no plans to offer minigames on smartphone devices.”
While we have been reporting that Nintendo remains adamant about not putting its games onto smartphones, it looks like the publisher might have less of an issue putting demos on mobile devices.
According to Games Industry, Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported that Nintendo’s president, Satoru Iwata, told Nintendo’s investors that the company was seeking ways to use mobile devices to help expand their existing regime of console-based products. Iwata’s plans reportedly involve using smartphones to convey new information and videos about upcoming Nintendo products. This would mean that there is some sort of Nintendo app being developed that would be used as an up-to-date source of Nintendo-related media and information.
It was also reported Mario’s masters might include demos of Nintendo’s console titles to further push its products. These demos would only exist to promote Nintendo’s console-based library. While selling full games and ports of Nintendo titles on smartphones would seem to be the next logical step (however unlikely it seems), we’re not going to get to hyped up at the prospects until Nintendo’s actual plans are revealed during this week’s investor meeting.
