Watch Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain Cover R.E.M. and the Monkees

For most U.S. citizens, snooker sounds like something you might do to a ‘Jersey Shore’ cast member, but in other parts of the world, it’s a popular — and, if you’re good at it, fairly lucrative — game whose most skilled players become celebrities. In fact, the best of the best can even find themselves sharing a karaoke stage with a member of Iron Maiden.

Just ask newly crowned 2014 world snooker champion Mark Selby, who headed out for a celebration the night of May 5 and ended up crooning along with Maiden drummer and noted snooker enthusiast Nicko McBrain, who joined Selby in the Sheffield club after watching him win the championship. But rather than singing Maiden classics like ‘Run to the Hills’ or ‘The Number of the Beast,’ the duo — who were backed by the local alt-rock band Mancini Fires — teamed up for renditions of some fairly unexpected hits by other acts.

Thanks to the fan-filmed footage embedded in this post, we know the night’s festivities included Selby/McBain performances of R.E.M.‘s ‘Losing My Religion’ and the Monkees‘ ‘Daydream Believer’; Selby also reportedly regaled guests with his takes on ‘Mr. Bojangles’ and Kings of Leon‘s ‘Sex on Fire.’ All in all, it was probably one of the tamer nights out McBrain has enjoyed since joining Maiden in the early ’80s, but for Selby, it obviously meant much more.

“When my dad passed away I was 16. It was two months before I turned professional, and his last words were, ‘I want you to become world champion,’” he told the Independent. “I said to him, ‘I will do one day.’ Thankfully, it’s come true.”
