If you've been watching the 2014 Winter Olympics you may have spotted some exceptional athletes from our very own state of New York.

In all, 25 New Yorkers participated in the games! According to a press release from Governor Cuomo's office, here are our featured New York athletes. Notice how many are from Lake Placid, located just a couple of hours North of our listening area- and one of our favorite vacation destinations. We are proud to salute our New York Winter Olympic Athletes.

Skiing

  • Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, NY)
  • Ashley Caldwell (Plattsburgh, NY), aerial skiing.

This is Weibrecht’s second Olympic Winter Games. In 2010, he won a bronze medal in the men’s Super-G.

Ski Jumping

  • Peter Frenette (Saranac Lake, NY)

During the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Frenette was the United States’ second youngest competitor, just 17 years-old. Frenette will try to improve upon his 41st place finish four years ago.

Biathlon

  • Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.)
  • Tim Burke (Paul Smith, N.Y.)
  • Annelies Cooke (Saranac Lake, N.Y.)

Bobsled

  • Jamie Greubel (Lake Placid, N.Y.)
  • Nicholas Cunningham (Lake Placid, NY)
    Sergeant in the New York Army National Guard, 1156th Engineer Company
  • Justin Olsen (Lake Placid, NY)
    Sergeant in the New York Army National Guard, Joint Force Headquarters.

This is Greubel’s first Olympic Games, making her debut on the women’s bobsled team. Greubel has captured five World Cup medals this season, three bronze, one silver and one gold.

This is Olsen’s second Olympic Games. As a bobsled “pusher,” he won a gold medal in the sport at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.

Luge

  • Erin Hamlin (Remsen, NY)
  • Chris Mazdzer (Saranac Lake, NY)
  • Aidan Kelly (West Islip, NY) men’s singles luge
  • Matt Mortensen (Huntington Station, NY) doubles luge
    Sergeant in the New York Army National Guard, 1156th Engineer Company

Hamlin is the 2009 women’s singles luge world champion.

Mazdzer has won two World Cup silver medals.

Nordic Combined

  • Bill Demong (Vermontville, NY)

During the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Demong made U.S. history by becoming the first U.S. Nordic combined athlete to win an individual medal, gold. He also anchored Team USA to a silver medal in the team event. Demong was also honored by carrying the U.S. flag into the Closing Ceremony. Demong has won 22-career World Cup podiums and this will be his fifth and final Olympics. Bill Demong is pictured here during the Nordic Combined.
