The Schenectady Police Department is on the hunt after several reported cases of people impersonating National Grid workers to scam residents of money.

The reports claim a person calls the individual or business claiming they have an overdue electric bill. The caller says that if they don't pay up within the hour, the power will be disconnected. The caller then ask the individual or business to put the "amount owed" on a prepaid credit/debit card and when they call back in to give them the number for payment.

It should be noted that National Grid does not have a "Disconnect Department" and no one from the company would ask someone to put money on a prepaid credit card then ask for the numbers.

Schenectady PD believes they are not the only city in the area seeing this type of crime and ask anyone with information to please call  the Detective Division at 518-382-5200.
