Mosquitoes Genetically Engineered To Not Favor Humans
With summer right around the corner, mosquito season looms. I'm sure if you didn't already know, then you could have guessed that mosquitoes favor human blood over some other animals. It has something to do with the carbon dioxide we breath out. Also mosquitoes really do favor some people over others. So when Gizmag.com reports that the researchers at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute have genetically engineered mosquitoes to not favor humans over other animal, we got excited. Unfortunately mosquitoes are important to our ecological system and it could have an adverse reaction to our ecological system if we start messing with their sense of smell. The good news is these researchers can take what they learned about a mosquitoes sense of smell and make a better repellent. Not only are mosquitoes extremely annoying, but they also kill more humans than any other animals by spreading disease.
