Gamers got their first look at Mortal Kombat X at Sony's E3 2014 press conference. The gameplay trailer shows off three new, as of yet unnamed characters. Sorry, "kharakters."

In addition to footage of the classic match-up between Sub-Zero and Scorpion, we get a look at two new fighters in a battle of their own. A sinister looking, wasp-themed female takes on a pair of fighters who work together; a huge, lumbering, orc-like creature, and his small rider who uses his blades to complement the big guy's strength. Both bouts showcase the game's hyper-violent fighting style and use of environmental elements.

Based on the trailer, Mortal Kombat X is shaping up to be the fighting game to beat on new-gen consoles. It looks amazing, with excellent character models that feel formidable, spectacular effects and animations that flow together better than any 2.5D fighter I've seen. The way fighters interact with one another is especially impressive. This new game marks the beginning of a new era for MK, with a roster of mostly new kombatants. These first two/three neew additions are interesting and unique, but still feel at home in the world of Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat X is coming to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC next year.
