Michael Phelps Fails To Medal In First Race At London Olympics

He only needs three medals to become the athlete with the most Olympic Medals, after the 400 Individual Medley he still needs three medals. American teammate Ryan Lochte wins the first gold for the United States and Phelps fails to medal in the event. Lochte showed the world why he may be the best swimmer at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Phelps on the other hand claims he had a crappy race in a event he simply hates.

After winning gold in the 400IM in Beijing, Phelps vowed he would never race the 400 again. However as the London Olympics came closer Phelps accepted the 400 as a challenge he could handle. In the race Phelps usually makes up ground in the butterfly leg and finish strong in the freestyle part of the race but a 17 year old from Japan sneaked by him and kept Phelps out off the medal stand.

I felt fine for the first 200 meters and then I just don’t know. They just swam a better race – a smarter race than me. They were more prepared. That’s why they are on the medal stand.
