As men we can be pretty stubborn, but it is very important that we all go get a basic check up every year.

According to Yahoo Health most men don't go to the doctor on a regular basis.  Now I'm not talking about going because you have the sniffles or anything. I'm talking about going to get a regular check up just to make sure that everything is in running order.  You don't want any surprises years down the road.

Older men especially should be going to see the doctor for a yearly check up.  I hadn't been to the doctor since my initial physical for college, and that was back in 2003.  Last year I went and was very lucky that I was perfectly healthy but a lot men could have something that they don't even know about.  Yahoo Health has put together a list of 5 reasons that men need to go to the doctor.

1. Check on your heart
You may not know it but your heart could actually be hiding something.  Heart disease is very common, but can be treated and prevented.  As a matter of fact the first symptom could end up being death, so you may want to get it checked out just in case.

2. Your Blood Sugar
There are some signs that you could diabetic but the only way to know for sure is if you get your blood sugar checked.  The doctor can take care of that to either clear your mind or give you an effective way to treat it.

3. Cancer Check
Where as this may be a bit uncomfortable you, you need to get a colonoscopy to check for the most common form of cancer.  I know that I don't want to be surprised by something like this but it's very treatable and they usually catch it early.  Once men hit 40 they need to get checked for this yearly.

4. Aneurysm
I don't think there is anything scarier than that.  An aneurysm is something that is devastating.  One in your brain is virtually undetectable but ones in the rest of your body can be detected, especially ones in the stomach.

5. Take a look at that mole
You may want your doc to take a look at that mole because it could in fact be something thats not a mole at all.  It could be melanoma, which 1 in every 39 men get.  Another thing that is very treatable, but you have to go to the doctor in order to do that.

In other words, stop putting off going to get a check up!  We can all live a long healthy life if we go to the doctor.  I try and go at least once a year.  I'm not sure why us men try to avoid the doctor, maybe it's to escape hearing bad news.  I can attest that when I went for the first time in a long time last year I was afraid I would hear something not so good and they told me I was fine.  So don't be scared, make an appointment and get checked out!  Why not today?
