Drinking your own urine may sound like a childish stunt, but it’s netted one man some serious cash.

A college student in San Diego has reached a $4.1 million settlement with the federal government after he was forced to drink his own urine when officers forgot he was in a jail cell following a drug raid by the Drug Enforcement Administration in April 2012.

Daniel Chong, who was taken into custody during the raid, says he screamed and tried to get officers’ attention. He was left on his own for five days, so he resorted to drinking his own urine in the hopes of staying alive.

Chong, said the whole experience was a nightmare:

I had to do what I had to do to survive. It’s so inconceivable. You keep doubting they would forget you."

Chong was eventually rushed to the hospital with kidney failure. He has also been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Chong also says he knows the incident is nothing more than a ‘grave’ accident. No individual officer will be disciplined because of the matter.
