The 2018 Winter Olympics are coming up.  Happening in PyeongChang, South Korea, the Olympic Games start in just 18 days.  Featuring sports such as alpine ski racing, freestyle skiing, bobsled, curling, ski jumping, among many others, the Winter OIympics are never boring.  Even though the games are 18 days away, some athletes are still waiting to hear if they made the slot to represent Team USA.

I just saw a great article on News 10 abc about Codie Bascue, of Whitehall, NY, representing Team USA on the bobsled team.  This made me think about all of the amazing athletes that we've had represent Team USA at the Olympic Games, and how many New Yorkers will be there this year!

New York is a hot bed for winter athletes.  With sports academies and a multitude of winter sports facilities located right in the Adirondacks, we send some GREAT athletes to the Olympic Games. Over the past two Winter Olympic Games, Andrew Weibrecht of Lake Placid, NY has represented Team USA proudly as a silver and bronze medalist as an alpine ski racer!  According to the Team USA page, he'll be competing again in 2018 (and hopefully snagging another medal).  Team USA also lists Tommy Biesmeyer out of Keene, NY, as as alpine ski racer.

In the last Olympics, Jacqueline Hernandez who spent some good time snowboarding and training at Hunter Mountain represented Team USA on the snowboard team.  In luge, Chris Mazdzer from Saranac Lake has both represented and will represent Team USA this year in the Winter Olympics.

It's a pretty cool thing to see so many local athletes competing to represent New York in the Olympic Games!  These are just a few names among many more.  As a former competitive athlete [ski racing], I know a number of people competing in these Olympics, from a number of countries around the world (many of whom I competed against myself), so I live to cheer on the Winter Games every four years.  It's SO great to see New York have such great representation!!  Making the Olympics is no easy feat, and I'll be blogging more as the Olympic Games go on as to how our New Yorkers do!
