When you think of Hippies, do you think of the "Peace & Love", pot-smoking, carefree  people depicted many times in movies?

Well, according to a school's text book in Louisiana, you would be very, very wrong.

According to the text book "America: Land I Love", Hippies are defined in a paragraph as the following: "Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles; these youth became known as hippies. They went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners. Rock music played an important part in the hippie movement and had great influence over the hippies. Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship."

The text book in question is in the school due to the Louisiana School Voucher system that allows poor or underprivileged children to attend private schools, most of which often have religious-based curricula. The system has been called in to question many times and is seen as very controversial.

It should also been noted, thanks to Mother Jones, that some of the items that might be taught to kids in the program include:

The Klu Klux Klan were actually Okay: "[The Ku Klux] Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross. Klan targets were bootleggers, wife-beaters, and immoral movies. In some communities it achieved a certain respectability as it worked with politicians."—United States History for Christian Schools, 3rd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 2001

Slaves owners were actually nice: "A few slave holders were undeniably cruel. Examples of slaves beaten to death were not common, neither were they unknown. The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well."—United States History for Christian Schools, 2nd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 1991

Or how about Dinosaurs & Humans hung out: "Bible-believing Christians cannot accept any evolutionary interpretation. Dinosaurs and humans were definitely on the earth at the same time and may have even lived side by side within the past few thousand years."—Life Science, 3rd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 2007

Yep, the youth of America are screwed.
