Green Day Planning Two Documentaries to Coincide With Three Album Blitz
A pair of new Green Day documentaries is being lined up for release to coincide with the band’s upcoming trio of albums, ‘¡Uno!,’ ‘¡Dos!,’ and ‘¡Tre!’ One doc will focus on the making of the three discs, which will drop one at a time starting in September and wrapping in January 2013.
That documentary is being lensed by Tim Lynch, who produced the ‘Green Day: Bullet in a Bible’ film and Tim Wheeler, a co-producer and editor of ‘The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights,’ a Canadian tour doc. A second Green Day documentary will highlight the band’s pre-fame, pre-’Dookie’ days.
Lynch and Wheeler have spent the last year-and-a-half shooting Green Day rehearsing, recording and rocking clubs. They also plan to capture more footage as the band prepares to travel to Japan and Europe for a few festival dates.
“It’s not going to be the sitting down, head shot of me going, ‘We started out blah blah blah,’” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong tells Billboard. “We wanted to get into lifestyles of rock ‘n’ roll and playing rock ‘n’ roll and letting the story kind of tell itself rather than create revisionist [history].”
The making-of movie tentatively will drop early next year with a possible premiere at the Sundance film festival. ‘¡Uno!’ drops Sept. 25.
