Georgia To Ban Slow-Poke Left Lane Drivers

Vladimir Mucibabic

We’ve all then there before, driving down the Northway in the far left lane when we happen upon someone is either going at or below the posted speed limit. Now, we aren’t saying we condone speeding but the left lane is meant for those us who want to go faster than the rest of the traffic (and for passing).

What do you when you get behind this person? Start to curse, throw your hands in the air, blow your horn, flash your lights?

Well, if you live in Georgia you might not have to worry about that any more!

The state is currently looking over a proposed ‘Slow Poke’ bill, officially known as House Bill 459. If passed, a person who does not move over to the right when an approaching car is going faster than them could be ticketed. (Thank you Lord!)

The ticket would be a misdemeanor charge but the bill’s creator understands it’s also going to be hard to enforce. Bill Hitchens says that a law enforcement official would have to see the act in order to tickets the person.

Hitchens spoke with Atlanta Journel-Constitution about his new bill: “My reason for doing this is more for an educational opportunity for people who don’t understand you’re not supposed to ride 55, 60 mph in that left lane when you’ve got 15, 16, 17 people lined up behind you.” He went on to say that this is the kind of scenario that can result in road rage.
