Paralyzed Man Uses Implanted Chip to Move His Hands Again [Video]

This is one of those news stories that will really give you hope for the human race.

When someone is the victim of a serious spinal cord injury, the prognosis typically isn’t good. Since the spinal cord is basically the means by which the bran communicates with the rest of the body, any injury sustained really jeopardizes that communication.

Ian Burkhart is a 23-year-old quadriplegic from Dublin, Ohio, who was paralyzed four years ago after a diving accident.

He has been wheelchair bound and hasn’t had use of his arms or hands since then. But thanks to a new technology called Neurobridge, Burkhart was recently able to use his hand with his own thoughts for the first time since his accident, according to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

“I never dreamed I would ever be able to do that again,” he said.

A few months ago, Burkhart had a chip planted in the portion of the brain that controls arm and hand movement. The chip communicates with a sleeve worn by the patient that is connected to the arm muscles. So, they’re basically cutting out the middle men, the damaged nerves and the spinal cord.

This is incredible!
