Foo Fighters Play Surprise Set as Part of Big Tony and Trouble Funk Celebration

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Foo Fighters over the years, it’s that they’re not shy about playing surprise shows. So it should have come as no surprise that when Dave Grohl was booked to take part in a celebration honoring Washington, D.C. legend Big Tony, his band wasn’t too far behind.

Grohl was initially expected to take part in an all-star jam with his pre-Nirvana and former Foo Fighters bandmate Pete Stahl along with Bad Brains‘ Darryl Jenifer and Dr. Know, and that actually did happen as the group played under the moniker The Don’t Need It’s.

But the Foo Fighters performance came as a surprise to those packed into the 9:30 Club for the show. According to Consequence of Sound, the group played a late night, two-hour set putting a capper on an evening that saluted Big Tony and his longtime band Trouble Funk.

Grohl has stated in a video prior to the event, “As a local kid growing up outside of Washington D.C. Trouble Funk were legends just as they are today. I opened up for Trouble Funk when I was maybe 16- or 17-years-old and every time I have seen the band play it has inspired me to go home and discover music and play music and play as well as I can.”

As for Foo Fighters’ set, the band didn’t really let anything out of the bag. The group has been laying down songs for a new record, but stuck to the standards during their set. The surprise show set list can be seen below.
