EA Searching for New Ways to Keep Older Games Online after GameSpy Closes

EA announced that it is searching for alternative methods to maintain the online gameplay of many of its older titles whose servers were previously being hosted by GameSpy.

Many of EA’s older titles are going to lose its online servers once GameSpy shuts down on May 31. This means that every game it was hosting will lose its online support and will need to find new servers to host them. According to IGN, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 has already switched over to GameSpy’s rival multiplayer provider, GameRanger.

EA stated the following in regards to trying to solve the problems it faces in terms of GameSpy’s closure:

“Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running. Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.”

EA acknowledges that many of its older Battlefield, Medal of Honor and Command & Conquer games still have dedicated fanbases that play many of titles on a regular basis. The company is seeking community-supported options to preserve the online capabilities of these games (which means that it won’t be spending its own money to hire third-party servers, such as GameRanger), and that it has yet to find a resolution.
