Dream Theater's Jordan Rudess cites an array of artists among his many influences, including the late Prince. Much like he did when David Bowie passed, the keyboardist has recorded a tribute to Prince following the Purple One's tragic death last week on April 21.

Rudess took time following Dream Theater's soundcheck in Philadelphia to record his tribute with a brilliant take on "Purple Rain" (video above). Opening with the gentle piano melody, he displays passion in small bits of animated movements, seemingly bearing his soul and losing himself in the magic of the moment.

The most interesting moment occurs when Rudess shifts his focus to the GeoShred program on his iPad, which allows him to simulate distorted guitar playing. His lightning fingers slide effortlessly across the tablet's screen, playing with different effects that control pitch and serve as a whammy bar of sorts. The solo couldn't be a more on point nod to Prince's distinguished guitar playing.

The news of Prince's death at 57 shocked the music world last week when the entertainer unexpectedly and suddenly passed away at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota. Six days prior to his passing, Prince was reportedly treated for a drug overdose believed to be caused by opiates. He was cremated over the weekend and autopsy results are still pending and will not be revealed potentially for weeks.

Dream Theater are currently on tour supporting their conceptual double album, The Astonishing. The progressive act will solely be performing the album in its entirety on the trek and a list of dates can be found here.
