As young-adult films often focus on contests and matters of life and death turned into sporting events, it's fitting that ‘Divergent' -- which stars Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, and future Kyle Reese, Jai Courtney -- released an extended Winter Olympics trailer.

As is often the case with films like this, Woodley's character is someone who must go on a hero's journey while also functioning as an avatar for audience members. Here she's a stand-in for people who feel special/different and too often pinned down into categories. And like many of these films, 'Divergent' is plotting to be a franchise, as director Robert Schwentke ('R.I.P.D.') was recently hired to helm the follow-up, 'Insurgent.' But considering the batting average of young-adult adaptations of late, we'll see if that happens after this film is released.

Here’s the official synopsis:

‘Divergent’ is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a future where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late. Based on the best-selling book series by Veronica Roth.

‘Divergent’ arrives in theaters on March 21.
