As a means of transportation, the bobsled has been around forever. It wasn't until the late 1800s that racing was established thanks to the Swiss adding a steering mechanism to a toboggan.

Albany first introduced the sport to the Swiss, who in turn made the the act of shooting down a track with a steerable wooden sled popular to American and British tourists vacationing at winter resorts throughout Europe.

Of course, wooden sleds were traded in for steel versions and competitions ensued circa 1898. Along with competition came rules, like weight requirements along with the number of riders and the riders position on the sled. I guess I could get into the complete history of bobsledding but some guy already took care of it: check it out here.

Along with an egg placed smack dab in the middle of our city, we can also take pride in the fact that we created a sport that the Jamaicans can participate in, cause I mean come on, I'm not sure they would have thought of the great sport of bobsledding, cause you know, it doesn't snow there.

You're welcome Jamaica and good luck in Sochi!
