As if the United States needed another disaster.  In the early hours this morning the US Geological Survey reported that a 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the coast of Alaska and now there is a tsunami warning in place.

The reports right no indicate that the quake hit 34 miles northwest of Anchorage and according to the Herald Tribune via the Associated Press.  Apparently the city felt the quake, but no damage has been reported as of yet.

The tsunami warning has been issued for the coastal regions of Alaska near Unimak, Dutch Harbor and Adak.  More on this story as it develops.

UPDATE-8:22am

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says that people near the quake area may see unusual wave action and rising waters.  They have told everyone to seek higher ground.

The AP is reporting that the people of Dutch Harbor were woken up by sirens and some have moved to seek higher ground.  CNN reports via KOAT that the quake occurred 6.2 miles below the surface making it very capable of damage.  Thankfully it happened in an area that isn't very populated.

Update-11:00am

The tsunami warning has been lifted and no damage has been reported.  The residents of the small town of Atka were the ones directly effected, but the population of 60 seems to be doing just fine.
