Bobcat Attacks Two People In New Scotland [UPDATE]

New details about the incident may indicate that the animal was sick or in distress.

Yesterday afternoon we told you about a story that was developing about a bobcat attacking two people in New Scotland, in Albany County. At the time there weren't many details on the incident but today we are getting a bit more insight as to how things played out.

A New Scotland couple was apparently hanging out over at their neighbors' house when the woman began to hear a bit of rustling and a hissing sound and that's when a bobcat lunged at her and began to bite her repeatedly in the arms and legs. According to the TU, her husband heard her screams and tried to leave the neighbors' house but the bobcat managed to get a piece of him too.

At that point, the homeowner tried to pin down the bobcat but ultimately ended up shooting it in the head.

It's relatively uncharacteristic of a bobcat to attack unprovoked. Normally they are more of the stay back and hide out type of animal, which has authorities wondering if the animal may have been sick and just sort of wandered off. The DEC is in possession of the body and it will soon be tested for diseases.

Needless to say, keep aware of your surroundings, especially if you live in or will be visiting rural areas. If you happen to come across a bobcat, authorities say the best plan of action is to remain calm and get away then call the DEC or another form of authority and let them know the animal's location.

Luckily the couple is going to be okay. Both are being treated for non life-threatening injuries at St. Peters.
