Blur’s Recording Comes to a Halt

Blur‘s future is somewhat tenuous, as the group has come to a halt in their recording sessions. Singer Damon Albarn hinted earlier this year that he felt the reunited band’s time together might be winding down — and that might include their studio work as well as their time on the stage.

Producer William Orbit, who had been working with the band, tells NME that the group had a solid start on recording new music, but that Albarn stepped away three weeks ago. He explains, “The new stuff sounded amazing. Then it all stopped suddenly. It was all over with Damon, and the rest of the band were like, ‘Is this it?’”

Albarn has wavered on his status with Blur, stating in one interview that he felt the band would be done for good after their summer performance at the Olympics, but just last month he gave another interview stating that might not be the case.

Given the singer’s wealth of projects, it’s possible that scheduling is factoring into his ability to commit to Blur. This year alone, he’s already had a Gorillaz collaboration with James Murphy and Andre 3000 for a Converse campaign, he’s issued his Rocket Juice and the Moon album featuring Flea and Tony Allen and he also has his ‘Doctor Dee’ opera project with a full-on soundtrack.

As for Blur, the band will play four U.K. warm-up dates this August and has appearances in Denmark and Sweden leading into their sold out London Hyde Park show on August 12 that’s associated with the Olympic Games.
