Heading to New York City this weekend, be prepared to pay more in tolls.  Be prepared for sticker shock as a plan to increase tolls as much as 50 % on bridges and tunnels begin Sunday at 3am.  Cash tolls on the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge are scheduled to rise from $8 to $12. By December 2015 the toll will be at $15.

Supposedly these toll hikes are for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to use in rebuilding of the World Trade Center.

Port Authority claims it is using the hikes to replace cables on the G.W. rehabilitate the corkscrew-shaped ramp into the Lincoln Tunnel as well as other maintenance projects to help rebuild the economy.

There are motorist groups who are asking the U.S. Department of Transportation to block these hikes as they violate a 1987 U.S. Law that states tolls  and money collected should be used for maintenance and repair of highways not rebuilding of office development.

Either way.. it is an expensive price to pay to cross a bridge so be prepared.
