Assassin’s Creed Series Has No Definitive End Says Lead Writer

Assassins Creed

Darby McDevitt, lead writer on Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, has stepped forward and said that the time-traveling series always has room for more. While story arcs might come and go, such as the Desmond trilogy, the war between the Templars and the Assassins already has plenty of eras and places where they have previously clashed where players could to go to, including the modern era.

“This storyline has an ending, but because all of history is open to us we see the universe as a Doctor Who type thing,” McDevitt said in an interview with Edge. “There are so many possibilities we don’t want to definitively end the universe, but we can have storylines that have endings.”

McDevitt admitted there were plenty of instances where the fourth wall was broken and fan requests/interactions played pivotal roles in deciding some of the secondary and supplementary content found in the Abstergo offices and computers hacked during the modern parts of Assassin’s Creed 4. The secondary story content from Abstergo’s offices explained that diving into one’s ancestral memories via the Animus machine have been going on for quite a while, even when the process wasn’t perfected (and resulted in psychosis and even suicide for some). This means that, outside of the modern era of Animus users, there are ones in previous times whose ancestries could be explored as well.

McDevitt acknowledged some of the eras that fans would like to see the series visit, such as Victorian London and Feudal Japan, and admitted that his team would like to see many of these locations happen in an AC title as well. Black Flag already had a few crossover references to Ubisoft’s anticipated Watch Dogs title. “I will say that fans definitely think alike,” McDevitt said. “We have the same goals for the series, let’s say. I’ll leave it at that. We always want to surprise.”

Hopefully, Watch Dogs will have an Easter egg of its own that will hint as to what the next Assassin’s Creed title will bring to the franchise.
