Singer and actor Alvin Stardust has passed away at the age of 72, shortly after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The Telegraph looks back over Stardust's career, which reached an early peak during the '70s glam-rock era and produced seven U.K. Top 10 hits (including 'My Coo Ca Choo' and the chart-topping 'Jealous Mind') over a 25-year span. Before adopting the Alvin Stardust moniker, the singer -- born Bernard Jewry -- fronted the group Shane Fenton and the Fentones, taking over vocal duties after the real Fenton passed away from rheumatic fever.

Stardust scored his last batch of U.K. hits in 1984, the year in which he sent three singles into the Top 40: 'I Feel Like Buddy Holly' and 'I Won't Run Away' (both No. 7) and 'So Near to Christmas' (No. 29). He recorded sporadically over the ensuing decades, but remained busy on the live circuit and devoted himself to a number of other projects, including a children's television series titled 'It's Stardust.'

In the months before his death, Stardust had been working on his first album of new material in 30 years, titled 'Alvin.' A spokesperson told the Telegraph that the album's planned November release will proceed as planned, saying, "It is an extraordinary record. We have been playing it to people over the last few weeks and they thought it was Johnny Cash or Glen Campbell. Nobody guessed it was Alvin. It is fantastic. The record is absolutely going to come out as planned next month because that is what he would have wanted."
