Altamont Fair Starts Tuesday August 16th
Take a big wiff, it’s that time of year again, fair time! The Altamont Fair – The Capital Regions Hometown fair representing Schenectady, Albany and Greene Counties starts Tuesday August 16th. There are some new things and of course some old things, the fair has been in operation since 1893.
It’s time for the Altamont Fair 8/16-8/21. This year brings back by popular demand the inclusive $15 dollar ticket which includes unlimited rides, shows and parking.
I love going to the Altamont Fair. I’ve been going to the fair since I was a kid and we used to get free tickets in the mail from school. Remember?? The only sad part about it was school would be starting in a few weeks!!
Whats better than taking the family to the fair on a warm summer day or cool August night to to walk the exhibits and see the shows? Yes they still have to old fashioned 1-2 cyclinder farm machinery display where all you hear are the pops of the engines. The demolition derby was always a blast.
Don’t forget to see all the animals including the baby chicks, rabbits goats, horses and cows. By the way why does the chicken house stink so bad??!
One of my favorites are the racing pigs. I can sit there for hours.
Then of course there is the fair food. The Altamont Fair has some of the best italian sausages, and fried dough besides you have to have some of the Lakeside Farm Cider Donuts. – hot in the bag.
As I got older in my teen years, I remember spending the entire time on the Fairs midway. The flying bobs with Aerosmith’s ‘Dream On’ blasting from the loudspeakers. Upside down rides always got me going as change would fall out of my pockets. The clown in the dunking tank that would scream at all the people walking by only to be dunked by a 85 mile per fastball down the middle because he called some dude’s girlfriend ugly.
New this year- Irish Day at the Fair – which is Saturday, August 20. Featuring Irish music and dance. Also the Schenectady Pipe Band, Farrell School of Dance, The McKrells, Who’s Your Paddy, Fighting 86′s and the Wild Rovers will be there as well.
Wednesday is Senior Day – free admission for seniors until 4:00pm – The Reid Northrup Stage in the Grove will feature Colleen Pratt.
A Fireworks show on Thursday night presented by Quick Response Restoration.
Friday is our sister station WGNA’s Country Day – Steven L. Smith Band and Back 40 Band will perform.
Sunday brings Christian Rock, the Battle of the Band winners to the grove topped off by a evening performance by the Spuyten Duyvil.
Many of the events you love are returning – Battle of the Teen Bands, Miss Altamont Fair, and Blue Ribbon Cooking Competitions.
Find a good night and head to the Altamont Fair after work. After all it’s your hometown fair and there really is nothing else like it.
