Beloved actor Tom Hanks has revealed to the public that he was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He spilled the beans on David Letterman’s “Late Show.” Read on for all the details.

The 57-year-old star of upcoming film Captain Phillips (opening Friday) was on the set of Letterman last night when the subject of his health came up after Letterman commented on his thin stature.

Hanks informed Letterman that he had struggled with high blood sugars since the age of 36. At a recent visit to the doctor he was informed that it had developed to type 2 diabetes, the most common type. Unlike type 1, type 2 individuals can still produce insulin, just not a sufficient amount to keep sugar levels maintained. If kept under control, it will pose no immediate life-threatening risks.

Hanks says he is in the best shape he’s been in a long time, which, if kept up, will help keep him healthy despite the disease.

The article states:

My (Hank’s) doctor said, Look, if you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school, you will essentially be completely healthy and not have type 2 diabetes, Hanks said. And I said to her, Well, I’m gonna have type 2 diabetes.
